Description

Ofloxacin, CAS # 82419-36-1, is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic with broad antibacterial activity against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, as well as against mycobacteria.

General Description

  • Ofloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is an analog of nalidixic acid
  • Ofloxacin can directly interact with pneumococcal autolysin (LytA) at its choline binding domain, thus inhibiting the ability of LytA to degrade the pneumococcal cell wall
  • Ofloxacin is racemic and its (S)-enantiomer is levofloxacin

Applications

  • Ofloxacin may be used in pharmacokinetic laboratory studies and high-throughput drug screens
