N-Acetylneuraminic acid is useful biologically in neurotransmission, leukocyte extravasation, viral or bacterial infections and carbohydrate-protein recognition. Neu5Ac is used to study its biochemistry, metabolism and uptake. Neu5Ac is used in the development of nanocarriers.
