Used as a hydrocarbon dry cleaning solvent. Doctor Solution, Chem-Lab is a sodium plumbite solution (PbO–NaOH) manufactured according to ASTM D-4952 standards. Also used to remove mercaptan sulfur from gasoline and other light petroleum distillates.

The "doctor sweetening process" is an industrial chemical process for converting mercaptans in sour gasoline into disulfides to remove the offensive odor. It does not impact the darkened color or decrease toxic sulfur dioxide engine emissions caused by the sulfur.
